Validation of a Self-Administered Outcome Measure for Young Patients With Hip Trauma (COTS-H)
Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Traumatic injury to the hip joint (dislocation, acetabular/femoral head/femoral
    neck fracture)
  • Age between 18 and 60 years
  • Willing and able to complete consent and study participation
  • Activity level of 4 or greater on a modified Tegner Activity Scale (see below)

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Active malignancy
  • Polytrauma patients with injuries projected to affect rehabilitation course
  • Prior injury or surgery to the affected hip
  • Inability to provide informed consent or participate in study duration
  • Pregnant patients
  • Patients who have language, psychiatric or cognitive difficulties that prevent
    reliable completion of the questionnaires
  • Incarcerated patients

Description

This study is a multi-centre, prospective cohort study of young patients with traumatic hip fractures and/or dislocation. This study proposes to validate the psychometric properties of the COTS-H outcome score to assess health-related quality of life of individuals with traumatic hip injuries.

Sample size= 125

Tegner Activity Scale

Level 10: Competitive sports: soccer, football, rugby (national elite, world/Olympic level)
Level 9: Competitive sports: soccer, football, rugby (lower divisions), ice hockey, wrestling, gymnastics, basketball
Level 8: Competitive sports: racquetball, squash, badminton, track and field athletics (jumping, etc.), down-hill skiing
Level 7: Recreational sports: soccer, football, rugby, ice hockey, basketball, racquet sports, yoga, running at least 5 times per week
Level 6: Recreational sports: water sports, skiing, cycling, mountain climbing, jogging at least 5 times per week
Level 5: Work: heavy labor (construction, etc.); Competitive sports: cycling, cross-country skiing; Recreational sports: jogging on uneven ground at least twice weekly
Level 4: Work: moderately heavy labor (e.g. truck driving, etc.)
Level 3: Work: light labor (nursing, etc.)
Level 2: Work: light labor Walking on uneven ground possible, but impossible to back pack or hike
Level 1: Work: sedentary (secretarial, etc.)
Level 0: Sick leave or disability pension because of knee problems
