Narcotic Prescribing and Patient Perceptions Following Outpatient Orthopedic Trauma Surgery

Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria:
  1. Age 16 and over and consenting to participate
  2. Outpatient surgery at the Halifax Infirmary to treat an acute musculoskeletal injury

Exclusion Criteria:

  1. Taking narcotic analgesics prior to injury
  2. Admission to hospital after surgery
  3. Concurrent procedures by other surgeons
  4. Non-operative treatment

Description

The purpose of our study is to prospectively evaluate opioid prescribing, consumption, patient reported satisfaction, and the fate of any unused prescribed medications following outpatient orthopedic trauma surgical procedures.

This will be a non-interventional, descriptive, retrospective, survey based study looking at prescribing habits, patient attitudes and use, and the fate of narcotic medications after outpatient musculoskeletal trauma surgery.

Sample size= 100
