The effect of knee joint swelling on gait mechanics and muscle activation characteristics in moderate knee osteoarthritis

Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria:
  • Over the age of 50
  • Unilateral symptomatic knee pain
  • Radiographic evidence of knee OA
  • No musculoskeletal disease or injury other than knee OA
  • Able to climb stairs, jog and walk (more than a city block)

Specific Study Objectives:

  • The proposal aims to improve our understanding of differences in knee joint biomechanics and muscle activation patterns between symptomatic and asymptomatic knees of individuals with unilateral moderate medial compartment knee OA and whether these differences are explained by joint effusion. Combinations of state-of-the-art techniques that include the analysis of bilateral three-dimensional motion and moments, knee joint muscle electromyography and knee joint ultrasonography, provide a novel method to address this objective.
